A Japanese lidded box, - Antiquariato

late 19th cent., silver, rectangular, rounded corners, press-in lid with engraved bird of paradise spreading its wings, fretwork décor to the rim, colourfully enamelled (partially missing), base with lettering, later English import hallmark, 8,7 x 8,7 cm (HS)

According to the accompanying note, the box was gift of a Japanese ruler in 187(?) to Francis Elgar (1845-1909). Francis Elgar was a British naval engineer and was active in this region between 1879-1881 as an adviser to the Japanese government. The lettering on the base makes reference to a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, Kosai Hokushin (1824-1876).
