Bernardino Licinio was born in circa 1485-89 and died in or shortly after 1550. He was originally from Bergamo, but spent most of his career in Venice. His artistic output covers various genres, but he is particularly known as a portraitist, mostly of female sitters. The present portrait of an unknown lady, perhaps in her late twenties or early thirties, is a typical example of his corpus of works, displaying the influence of Palma Vecchio, as well as the works of a younger generation of artists, such as Moretto da Brescia. The present painting can be compared to Licinio’s portrait of Countess Valmerodo, which is signed and dated 1546.
The inscription in the background of the present painting reads: ‘OM[NI]A VAN[ITA]S’.
