Workshop of Peter Paul Rubens
(Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp)
Achilles educated by the Centaur Chiron,
oil on canvas, 112 x 98 cm, framed
The present painting is probably a preliminary study for a series of tapestries devoted to the life of Achilles from the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens. Except for minor deviations, this work corresponds to the modello painted by Rubens together with a workshop collaborator. It might also be a further preliminary study for the large-sized tapestry cartoons, which were lost as early as circa 1670, or alternatively a ricordo by a workshop collaborator of a composition regarded as particularly successful. It can be assumed that the present painting was executed in Rubens’s studio, as the unidentified painter must have known the modello that had remained in the workshop.
