Head of a youth (a study for Mary Magdalene?),

The painting is oil on canvas and not as described in the printed catalogue.
Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium, since the 1990s
The present composition shows a study of the physiognomy and hair of the head of a youth, commonly executed by van Dyck and copied by his assistants, for later use in larger history paintings. As was common practice in Antwerp workshops, life studies of boys were sometimes used by van Dyck for female representations.
Gustav Glück attributed the present study to Anthony van Dyck based on a photograph (a copy of a certificate, 30 October 1931 is available) describing it as a characteristic work of the master. He compared it with the head of Venus, now identified as Thetis, in Thetis Receiving the Weapons of Achilles in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 498).
Willem Vogelsang, Utrecht University, certified the work as van Dyck (a copy of a certificate dated 21 September 1931 is available).
Erik Larsen also gave the present work to van Dyck (a copy of a certificate dated 9 August 1992 is available). He suggested it was a head study for a representation of Mary Magdalene.
