Kashkuli,
Southwest Persia (Iran), c. 206 x 130 cm, dated 1899, to our knowledge there are three more published carpets of this rare species. They differ only very slightly in the field design, display the same borders, but different ground colours and different inscriptions. This pictorial carpet depicts the Achaemenides with their king, carved in stone in the ruins of Persepolis. Finely knotted with silk weft threads, with the signature “Amale Gashgai” at top, translation of the lower characters not available, several minor repairs and damaged areas, the side edges and finishes have been partly filled in, mounted entirely on linen.
