Iran, c. 76 (101) x 67 (90) cm, early 17th century, Safavid textile art was profoundly influenced by miniature painting. Precious silk fabrics were used both in the household and as clothing. Today, fabrics with figurative patterns are especially valued among collectors. The present piece is a complete silk embroidery with all-round border and original side finishes. The central field is divided by six horizontal rows of motifs in alternating directions. They depict a distinguished young man, a sketched beggar’s profile and a pair of mountain goats near a fruit-bearing pomegranate tree in continuous repeat. This full-size, museum-quality textile is extremely rare. Mounted on fabric and additionally stretched on linen and a wooden stretcher.
