Provenance:
Collection Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome.

The present drawing is a preparatory design for the figure of Fides in the oil sketch of the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf (Inv. M 2592; comp.: D. Graf, Die Handzeichnungen des Giuseppe Passeri, Düsseldorf 1995, Cat. A 11, p. 272). In the drawing Fides is not only depicted with the cross and the book being presented by a putto like in the oil sketch but also with her foot on a pagan idol that was smashed to the ground.

The attribution to Giuseppe Passeri was confirmed by Prof. Francesco Petrucci on the basis of a high relsoution digital photograph.
