The present head study from life is painted from the same model drawn by Jacob Jordaens in red chalk in two studies of the head of an old woman circa 1620/30 in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam. Studies like these were made by Jordaens for use in his larger history paintings, and this woman appears in the master’s Triumph of Bacchus and Satyr and Boar.
