Brussels, c. 290 x 252 cm, 18th century. This fine tapestry depicting a rural market scene is probably based on a model by David Teniers II. At a market stand, a group of people shows interest in the fresh fruit and vegetables on offer, while others gather around a herald in the background. The new middle classes found scenes from peasant life very amusing. In keeping with this fashion, many workshops began to produce so-called “Tenier tapestries”. This piece of craftsmanship captivates its viewers through its great plasticity and depth. Good condition with minor professional repairs. Entirely sewn on linen. (VP)
