Shirvan, East Caucasus, c. 148 x 127 cm,
East Caucasus, c. 148 x 127 cm, 19th century. Characteristic of Takht-e Shirvan rugs are the throne-like motif (“takht-e”) crowned by imposing ram’s horns and the mihrab-shaped gable, both of which are set in rectangular cartouches. This early specimen features five additional cartouches with depictions of pomegranate trees. Especially worth mentioning is the three-dimensional effect achieved in the execution of the tree trunks. Partly thin pile, corroded shades of brown and a few creases, but fully preserved and original. (VP)
