Ando Hiroshige
![Ando Hiroshige - Antiquariato Ando Hiroshige - Antiquariato](/fileadmin/lot-images/39Q200323/normal/ando-hiroshige-6644007.jpg)
(Japan 1797-1858) Saruwaka-machi yoru no kei (Evening in the Saruwaka Quarter), series: "Meisho Edo hyakkei" (Hundred Views of Edo), signature (centre left in red longitudinal cartouche): Hiroshige ga (designed by Hiroshige), censor seal (upper right outer margin, round): aratame (approved), half cut, date seal (left near censor seal, oval): dragon 9 (1856), half cut, publisher’s seal (whole, lower left): Shitaya Uo(ya) Ei(kichi), half cut, nishiki-e (coloured woodblock print). The series consists of 120 sheets, with the title page added at at a later date and a replaced scene. According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, the present sheet was printed mainly from the original woodblocks (an alteration in the thickness of the left outer line above the roof is visible in all original impressions). In particular, the sky block was replaced (different wood grain than in the first impression, and the moon is lower). Hence, the present sheet constitutes a second, slightly different state. The cloud over the moon from the first print is missing here. The sheet title cartouche is a different colour. The red in the lanterns is no longer visible. The colours in the present sheet have been altered compared to the first print (e.g. rich blue components in both garments and buildings). The colours have faded. The impression is largely satisfactory. For a comparison with an early print, see: Melanie Trede and Lorenz Bichler: Hiroshige, Meisho Edo hyakkei, Cologne 2015, ill. 90, 34.7 x 22.6 cm, attached to the upper margin of the cardboard on the back, mounted, (CT)
