A Rare Empire Candle Chandelier,
Vienna, c. 1800/10, for 6 candles (3 pairs of candle arms), metal frame in bowl shape and ‘verde antico’ decoration, fire-gilt bronze applications with pine cone finials, arms decorated with acanthus leaves and female half-figures carrying the drip guards, an urn-shaped connecting element holds the chain rings together in snake decor, these terminate in the upper ceiling rosette, height c. 102 cm, diameter c. 55 cm, cleaned condition. This dainty chandelier is a good example of how the Viennese bronze founders and chisellers of the Empire era competed with French master bronziers. In terms of quality, these products are in no way inferior to their French counterparts. They are less severe than their French equivalents and are characterised by great delicacy and love of detail.
