The gilding of the edges was executed with 24 carat fine gold, which is much thicker than bright gold. Polishers achieve a high gloss effect by means of agate and haematite. The polishing process takes three times as long as the application. This service decoration is considered one of the most beautiful ever created for the Nymphenburg Manufactory.
Wolfgang von Wersin, famous for his “new objective” style, was commissioned by the Manufactory to design a new table service in 1928. The younger generations have a preference for Wolfgang von Wersin’s “modern classic”, including the “Lotos Service” from 1932/1936. Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg owes three of its most important designs to Wolfgang von Wersin, famous for his “new objective” style. The elegant ADONIS, LOTOS and SAIGON services were created at the beginning of the 1930s. For LOTOS, von Wersin selected a simple basic shape with sweeping bowls and half-round upwardly flowing handles, which, with their gentle curves, are evocative of opening blossoms. Because of its liquid and dirt repellent leaves, the lotus blossom symbolises purity in the Far East. <br<Born in Prague in 1882, WOLFGANG VON WERSIN concluded his architectural studies with an intermediate diploma in Munich at the age of 21 years. In Munich, he attended the “Lehr und Versuchs-Atelier für angewandte und freie Kunst”. From 1912, he also designed for the Deutsche Werkstätten AG and within a very short time achieved great recognition for his furniture, fabric, wallpaper and ceramic designs as well as for his exhibition architecture. He worked for Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg until the 1960s.
