Emil Hultmark, Royal Academy Exhibitions 1794-1887, Stockholm 1935, p. 270, no. 180.

This lot shows a view of the town of Narni in the Umbria region, along with its arched Roman bridge, the Ponte d’Augusto, which spanned the river Nera. The bridge was once about 160 metres long, and the southernmost of its four arches still survives today. The structure soared approximately 30 metres high and was built from travertine blocks during the reign of Augustus, around 27 BC. It was part of the Via Flamina, not to mention one of its main bottlenecks, and for centuries, anyone travelling to Rome had to cross it.
