Jacob Grimmer
(Antwerp 1526 – before 1590)
The Entrance of Christ into Jerusalem,
oil on panel, 33 x 54 cm, framed
We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of the present painting to Jakob Grimmer. A written certificate (March 2020) is available.
Ertz writes about Grimmer and his landscape paintings: ‘His landscapes betray influences coming from Hans Bol and Hieronymus Cock. As he was a contemporary of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, his manner of painting was of course also extremely closely related to the latter’s work. His landscapes often depict wide, hilly scenery and are mostly inspired by his native region of Brabant. However, the circular temple in the background of this fantastic landscape is a direct clue to the figural scene in the foreground, representing Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem.’
