Literature:

A. Roy, Gerard de Lairesse 1640–1711, Paris 1992, pp. 274-5, cat. no. P 99 ill.
Alain Roy writes that the present picture by de Lairesse, marked by the close-up nature of its composition and dramatic lighting effects, can be dated to the artist’s output between circa 1675–1680. Roy does not support the suggestion that the young lady playing the lute is the artist’s wife Marie Salme, and believes that it is not possible to identify the woman. The presence of the putto holding a finger to his lips and the repetition of the figure of the sumptuously dressed young lady in a later composition, again as a representation of music, reinforces his view that the present painting is not a portrait.
