Provenance:
Corrado Simeoni Heirs, The Hague (Holland)
European Private Collection

“Unlike other German artists, who choose a neo-expressionist approach that aligned with a directive we could call transavantgarde, Penck finds his key reference point, in terms of form, in Klee’s animistic drawing. Having established such a significant relationship to Klee, we must immediately add that his essential figures acquire ample nourishment from an unconscious that digs so far back in time as to exhume solicitations typical of an archaic, graffitistic environment with its origins rooted in the primordial manifestations of our species. As a result, this repeated imprint created by him takes on the meaning of a decisive, indelible chromosomal mark that not only concerns the artist’s experience, but that of the whole of humanity, too. And it does so in such a way that it must be taken on by those who perceive it: they cannot keep at a distance, as they might wish after its first impact, the first moment of sensing the discomfort that their perception then experiences.”
