...This is exactly why I love great art: because it always remains a secret, no matter how long you look at it. And what’s even more comforting is that Markus Prachensky has no clue either. I’m quite sure of that. I read in a catalogue that wherever he goes, he carries a copy of Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait (1434) with him, perhaps the most elaborately detailed picture ever painted. The wedding couple is in the room: everything in detail, and yet the details are invisible. They are completely absorbed in the monumentality of this picture. I think that Markus Prachensky views the Van Eyck painting much in the same way as his own paintings: with astonishment and disbelief. Of course, he will remember how this or that brushstroke was created, at what speed, with what intensity he painted it. His hands remember too. But nobody can explain the mysterious effect of the black areas between the red brushstrokes. That is the place where art is created.

…Genau deswegen liebe ich die große Kunst: weil sie immer ein Geheimnis bleibt, egal wie lange man sie betrachtet. Und noch tröstlicher ist, dass Markus Prachensky genauso wenig Ahnung hat. Da bin ich mir sicher. In einem Katalog las ich, dass er wohin er auch geht, eine Abbildung von Jan van Eycks Arnolfini-Porträt (1434) bei sich trägt, vielleicht das kunstvollste, detailreichste Bild, das je gemalt worden ist. Das Hochzeitspaar steht im Zimmer: alles ist Detail, und doch sind die Details unsichtbar. Die gehen ganz und gar auf in der Monumentalität dieses Bildes. Ich denke mir, dass Markus Prachensky den Van Eyck genauso betrachtet wie seine eigenen Gemälde: staunend und ungläubig. Natürlich wird er sich erinnern, wie dieser oder jener Pinselstrich entstanden ist, mit welchem Tempo, welcher Intensität er ihn gemalt hat. Auch seine Hände erinnern sich. Aber keiner kann die geheimnisvolle Wirkung der schwarzen Flächen zwischen den roten Pinselstrichen erklären. Das ist der Ort, an dem Kunst entsteht.
