Anglo-Dutch School, second half of the 16th Century - Dipinti antichi

Portrait of a Hanseatic gentleman,
inscribed and dated upper left: AETA.57/1577,
oil on panel, 95 x 75 cm, framed

Provenance:
Collection of John Granville Morrison (1906–1996), 1st Baron Margadale of Islay, Fonthill House, Wiltshire;
his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 16 May 1984, lot 17 (as Willem Key);
Private European collection;
sale, Bonham’s, London, 5 July 2017, lot 3 (as Attributed to Adriaen Thomasz. Key);
Private collection, England

The present picture is an intriguing testament to the artistic links between the Low Countries and England in the 1500s, with the dress and register of the sitter suggesting he may be a merchant of the Hansa. Cornelis Ketel, whose style adapted to the milieu in which he worked, whether in London or Amsterdam, exemplifies this exchange. A comparable painting by Ketel (1548–1616) is in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid (inv. no. 206 1930–38).
