Ich wußte nicht wozu, wohin, wie lange, als ich 1952 begann, über fremde oder eigene Bilder zu malen. Erst langsam im Laufe der Jahre entwickelten sich geschlossene schwarze Flächen oder Strichbündel, in denen ich mich selber erkannte.
Diese Bilder korrigiere ich heute noch, immer weiter zu einer völligen Verdunklung, obwohl ich längst vergessen habe, was darunter war. Am liebsten arbeite ich an der Übermalung einer Übermalung. Ich wollte nie zerstören, sondern vervollkommen. Ein gewisser positiver Kontakt zur überarbeiteten Bildform war für mich allerdings notwendig. Obwohl nicht ausschließlich, so betreibe ich die künstlerische Arbeit in erster Linie als Selbstgespräch. Wie sich etwa der Traum im Tiefschlaf fortsetzt, so ist die Übermalung die Entwicklung dieses Selbstgespräches in ein Schweigen. Ein kommunizierbares, denn sonst würden mir andere nicht vor allem jene Bilder entreißen, welche ich aus reiner Selbstkommunikation schaffe und von denen ich hoffe, sie eines Tages zum Ausdruck einer gänzlichen Ruhe, eben jenes Tiefschlafs, führen zu können.
Je bedeckter das Bild, um so schwieriger ist jeder weitere Schritt bis zur völligen Geschlossenheit. Erst jahrelange Arbeit an einem Werk löscht alle billigen oder kostbaren Effekte. Heute, auch mit anderen künstlerischen Problemen beschäftigt, male ich an diesen Werken, soweit sie noch in meinem Besitz sind, durchschnittlich einen Pinselstrich im Monat. Bis zu meinem Ableben werden sie sich so noch stark verändern. …

When I started to paint over my own and other people’s pictures in 1952, I didn’t have the answers to the questions of why, what for, how long. It was only slowly, as the years went by, that closed-off black surfaces or bundles of lines developed, in which I recognised myself.
I am still amending these images today, continuing to reach a complete blackout, although I have long forgotten what was underneath. My favourite thing is to work on the overpainting of an overpainting. I never wanted to destroy them, I wanted to perfect them. I needed a certain positive contact with the revised form of the image. I carry out my artistic work primarily, albeit not exclusively, as a soliloquy. Just as dreams continue into deep sleep, for example, the overpainting sees this self-talk develop into silence. This silence is communicable: otherwise, other people would not snatch from me first and foremost those pictures which I create out of pure self-communication and which I hope, one day, to be able to guide to the expression of complete peace, precisely that same deep sleep.
The more overpainted the picture, the more difficult every subsequent step becomes until it is completely closed off. Only years of work on a piece erase all the cheap or valuable effects. Today, as I am also occupied with other artistic problems, I paint an average of one brushstroke per month on these works, as far as they are still in my possession. They will still undergo major changes until my death. ...
