The present painting is based on Rubens’s Lamentation (circa 1614) in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (inv.no 529). A popular composition, other notable versions exist in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp, and in the collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein (Vienna/Vaduz).
