inscribed on the back: Oranje Boven,
oil on canvas, 106 x 76 cm, framed
We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution to Jan van den Hecke the Elder on the basis of a photograph. The portrait set within it is by another hand, and the work illustrates the artistic exchange between the Southern and Northern Low Countries, where floral settings from Flanders were sometimes used for portraits painted in the Dutch Republic.
