Lotto No. 221

Flemish Artist working in Rome, 17th Century

Flemish Artist working in Rome, 17th Century - Dipinti antichi

A young shepherd playing the flute,
oil on canvas, 122 x 101 cm, framed

The present picture is both a naturalistically observed and yet classically-idealised Netherlandish portrayal of a shepherd, in keeping with the Arcadian notions of pastoral life that were fashionable from the 1620s onwards. Stylistically it may be placed among the oeuvre of the Bentvueghels, a group of Northern followers of Caravaggio that lived together in the area of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. The handling of the picture suggests it was executed by a Flemish rather than a Dutch artist.

It was in the Low Countries that the first coherent account of the life of Caravaggio was published, describing the artist ‘roaming from one fives court to the next, with a rapier at his side and his servant boy after him, inclined to fight and argue’ (see K. van Mander, Schilderboek, Haarlem 1604). Several Flemish followers of Caravaggio emulated the peregrination of their idol, making their way to Italy. Chief among them were Matthias Stom, Theodoor Rombouts and Louis Finson, as well as artists who still remain unidentified, such as ‘Giusto Fiammingo’.
