The present painting is the only remaining fragment of a lost work by Jan Steen, sold in Amsterdam, 13 June 1770, which is only known from copies in the Louvre, Paris, and formerly in a Dutch private collection. We are grateful to Guido M. C. Jansen and Fred Meijer, who both independently confirmed the present painting as an original work by Jan Steen.
