East Caucasus, c. 192 x 134 cm, 19th century. Dagestan lies north of the Kuba region and stretches from the northeastern flank of the Great Caucasus to the lowlands and the shores of the Caspian Sea. This white-ground carpet features extremely rare bird abstractions, still clearly recognisable in this specimen by the small head of feathers, which disappeared in later commercialised versions. With original, blue cotton edges and several traces of use, in good condition. (VP)
