A Tapestry,
Brussels, c. h. 342 x w. 385 cm, c. 1700. Important mythological pictorial carpet with a scene from the history of Rome. Hannibal reinstates Brancus, a prince of the Celtic Allobroges who had been expelled by his brother, to his rule. The divided border shows Andromeda and Perseus, with a narrative inscription in the entablature, alongside allegorical figures and colourful floral ornamentation. The galloon features the Brussels city mark with red shield and “BB” (Brabant Brussels). The mark of a master workshop is visible on the outer right. With a few losses and tears, soiling, old repairs and hardened areas, preserved in original condition. (VP)
