Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Tsuchiyama, haru no ame (Tsuchiyama, Spring Rain), sheet no. 50 from the series: "Tokaido gogusan tsugi no uchi" (The First Tokaido or Great Tokaido), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Takenouchi Magohachi (Hoeido), kiwame, dated c. 1833-34 (Tenpo 4-5). The present sheet is probably a slightly later impression than the version in the Edo Tokyo Museum. In both sheets the rain is quite thin, the blue bokashi in the brook goes from top to bottom and not the other way round as in most versions; the straw hat of the second figure from the right shows the same blank segments on the left side; similarly, in the area of the dividing line in the grey hill area, the same blank segment is visible to the left of the red cartouches, vivid red and green tones, signs of wormholes above the straw hat to the far right, one small hole below to the left tree trunk; almost full margins, slightly stained, album holes to the right corner outside the image area, the lines are hardly squashed, attached at the upper corners on the back, 24.9 x 37 cm, mounted,(CT)
