Cameroon grasslands. 18th-19th century. Wood. 41 x 45 x 47 cm. Reserved for the 'Fo', highest members of the kingdoms, each animal represents a different grade or function in society. The spider motives can be found on stools for judicial functionaries whilst the highest grades of chiefs and warriors (Kuo-si) are zoomorphic depictions of strengh and power, like elephant and panther.
