A rare and important Yami boat fragment.
Paiwan people, southern Taiwan, Botel Tobago island. Wood. Around 1900. 175 x 23 cm. Related to the Paiwan, the Yami are part of the original indigenous peoples of Taiwan, living on the small island of Botel Tobago. The figures with spiral arms and headdress represent Maga Moag, the mythological ancestor who gave the Yami their skills to build their boats. (VJ)
