Sawos region, Papua New Guinea. Wood, kauri shells. Early 20th century. 68 cm. Often made in pairs, these abstract masks represent one of the mythological siblings, founders of a clan. They were tied to large fiber basket masks of a dancer. These masks with birdlike features vary from village to village along the Sepik river region. (VJ)
