The present lots show the ruins of the Whitby Abbey on the massive headland which runs out to the south-East of Whitby on the north-east coast of England. Whitby Harbor was important as a base for fishing fleets and as a place to shelter from storms, particularly for ships sailing from the North East to London.
Whitby was one of Alfred William Hunt‘s favourite subjects, as was Durham. Like William Turner, he mostly painted the sky, the sun and the mist, seeking to paint those effects with mystery and peace. His representation of nature, typified by the present lots, is atmospheric and poetic.
A label on the reverse shows that the pictures came from his studio. Hunt came to London in 1865 and took over the Campden Hill Studio of the Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt, who was leaving for the Holy Land. He resided at 1 Tor Villa, Campden Hill, Kensington for the remainder of his life.
