Lotto No. 859

A Pair of Decorative Lanterns,

A Pair of Decorative Lanterns, - Mobili e Antiquariato

probably manufactured in the early 20th century after a design by IGNAZ GÜNTHER (1725 – 1775) for Nymphenburg Castle, gilt copper sheet frames in cylindrical shape on stylised lions’ paws, glazed on 4 sides with 1 hinged glass window each, finishes in openwork spherical shape, height c. 86 cm each, some flaking, otherwise cleaned condition. (DOC)

According to tradition, the original lanterns are based on a design by the Bavarian Rococo sculptor Ignaz Günther. In 1773, he designed the lanterns for the flight of steps on the garden side, which was rebuilt in stone in 1770-73 to replace the previous wooden structure. The four lanterns were executed in gilt lead in 1775 after Günther's death but according to his design, under the direction of the sculptor Roman Anton Boos. The original items are no longer preserved. The lanterns were replaced already in the 19th century, those on the east side to the roundabout after 1923.
