Johann Baptist Straub, (1704 Wiesensteig - 1784 Munich) was an important sculptor of the Rococo period.
He came from a family of sculptors and first worked for four years in the court art circle in Munich with the court sculptor Gabriel Luidl. He subsequently worked in Vienna from 1726 to 1734.
In 1734 he returned to Munich. Prince-Elector Karl Albrecht of Bavaria appointed him court sculptor in 1737.
Straub mainly decorated churches and monasteries in Upper Bavaria. Some of his important works are preserved in the Residenz in Munich and in Nymphenburg Palace. His ecclesiastical works include the altars of the monastery churches of Andechs and Schäftlarn as well as the St. Michael church in Berg am Laim (Munich).
Straub’s workshop was the most important in Munich at his time. His most important pupil was Ignaz Günther.
