gilt bronze, Latin cross shape, centre with Corpus Christi, cross finial with depiction of Mary, John, an Archangel and a saint, engraved inscription in Greek language and abbreviations: “behold thy son!” and “behold thy mother!”, 14.5 x 9.2 cm, Balkan (?), 11th/12th century, (Lu)
The present reliquary cross (encolpion) in traditional Byzantine form probably comes from the Balkans. Reliquary crosses have a very old tradition in the Byzantine Church and have been documented since the 7th century. Many of them were not manufactured in Byzantium itself, but in Asia Minor, Egypt and the Balkans (in the latter region especially in the 11th and 12th centuries). A copy of a certificate is enclosed.
