The son of a porcelain painter in Meissen, C. G. Jüchtzer began his apprenticeship as an former at the Manufactory in 1769. He worked for a few more years with the old master of form design and sculpture, Johann Joachim Kändler (1706-1775), and the young Michel Victor Acier (1736-1799). The Enlightenment, Classicism and the theses of Johann Joachim Winkelmann (1717-1768) made a lasting impression on his works. The best works of Classicism came from his workshop and became virtually synonymous with Classicism in Meissen. His Boy with Thorn is based on an eponymous Greek model from the 5th century BC. Its most famous version is the so-called Capitoline Boy with Thorn (“Spinario”) made of bronze, which can be found in the Musei Capitolini in Rome.
