COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE COUTURE EDITION 2008, NYMPHENBURG PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY
With the COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE - COUTURE EDITION the NYMPHENBURG PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY launched a unique project in terms of quality and complexity. On the occasion of its 260th anniversary, 16 of the internationally most famous couturiers designed new garments for the 16 COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE figurines by Rococo sculptor Franz Anton Bustelli, c. 1723-1763. These figurines, which at the time made the porcelain manufactory world famous and are still among its most artistic treasures, are reissued in a limited edition of 25 pieces. This is the first time that a cooperation between the main protagonists of the fashion world and the porcelain master workshops has been successfully realised on a large scale.
Unique to Bustelli’s designs is the garments’ exquisiteness and the figures’ physiognomies and expressions. The compositional refinement, the richness of detail and nigh-palpable materiality of the garments shaped by Bustelli make the COMMEDIA figurines one the masterpieces of porcelain history. For their decoration, Bustelli drew inspiration from the fashions of his time. Precisely this closeness to fashion in terms of content and form triggered the decision to have these figures “dressed” anew by today’s greatest fashion designers. With designs in their typical style, the couturiers present their approach to a contemporary interpretation of Bustelli’s figurines.
