porcelain, round platter with matching gilt edging, yellow-gold painted sun with rays, laurel wreath, Saturn, moon and stars as well as the ascending rocket with flag and inscription CCCP 2 January 1959, on blue sky background, diameter 34.5 cm, small scuffed areas
Dulyevo, Soviet Union 1959 (Ru)
A Rare “Dulevo plate”. On 2 January 1959, the Soviet Union successfully launched its Luna 1 satellite from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Luna 1 was the world’s first lunar probe and the first space probe. The planned goal of the mission to impact the moon was not achieved. Instead, it inadvertently became the first flyby probe by missing the moon on 4 January and entering an orbit around the sun. This plate is meant to commemorate that event. About 12-14 plates were produced for the astronauts and engineers of the moon landing.
