The present panel was recognized as work by a Westphalian master, executed around 1480, by Fritz Goldkuhle, Director of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn, in 1974.
It depicts Christ, held by soldiers clad in contemporary armour, with the Great Helm of the figure in the foreground typical of Germany and the Low Countries at the end of the fifteenth century. The expressive quality of Pontius Pilate’s face, and the highly defined hands, are characteristic of the school identified by Goldkuhle, while the gilded basin with which Pilate will wash his hands is modelled with relatively refined lighting effects.
