Bartolomeo Pedon

Bartolomeo Pedon - Dipinti antichi II

(Venice 1665–1732)
A nocturnal harbour scene,
oil on canvas, 132 x 235 cm, framed

The present painting is a work is characterised by a spontaneity of execution, vibrant warm colours and the modernity of its composition which is almost proto-romantic. These elements, which all reoccur in the series of made by Pedon and still in situ in the Ca’ Borini in Este, are present with even greater expressive force in the present composition.

The artist’s contemporary, Tommaso Temanza, described the Venetian painter as ‘excellent at Landscapes and at Tempests’ [‘eccellente nelli Paesi, e nelle Tempeste’] (see Zibaldon de’ Memorie Storiche appartenenti a Professori delle Belle Arti del Disegno, 1738, ed. by N. Ivanoff, 1963, p. 37). Indeed, alongside Antonio Marini and Marco Ricci, Bartolomeo Pedon was a great exponent of Venetian landscape painting at the close of the seventeenth through the start of the eighteenth centuries. His dramatically elaborate scenes: stormy seascapes, nocturnes and fantastical landscapes, which stand significantly apart from the Arcadian taste of the era, demonstrate the painter’s considerable originality as an artist.
