signed lower left: Luigi Querena,

The present composition depicts one of the most celebrated views of Venice. The Bacino of San Marco looking west from the Riva degli Schiavoni. A similar composition by Luigi Querena was sold in these Rooms in 2019.
The son of Latterzio Querena, a painter of historical and religious subjects, Luigi studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti, Venice from as early as 1836. He was influenced by the Venetian vedute or view painting tradition of the previous century. In his traditionally conceived view paintings Querena described contemporary life, as well as the history of the city. A series of eleven of his paintings are conserved in the Museo Correr, Venice. In 1857, he was elected an honorary member of the Accademia di Belle Arti.
