Love Difference - Artistic Movement for an InterMediterranean Politic, was a project created and conceived by Michelangelo Pistoletto in 2002, for which he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale the following year. It was a transversal, pan-European and inclusive work.
"Love difference is a name, a slogan, a programme announcement. The movement unites the universality of art with the idea of political transnationality and focuses its activity on the Mediterranean area because it reflects the problems of global society. [Uniformity and difference are the two antithetical terms that represent the greatest conflictual tension in today's planetary reality. A policy that leads to "loving differences" is vital for the development of new perspectives in the entire social structure
M.Pistoletto, Manifesto Love Difference, 2002, in "Journal7", Cittadellarte, Biella 2002, p. 47
The symbol of this intention, exhibited at the Biennale, was a large, mirrored table, in the shape of the Mediterranean Sea basin, around which chairs were placed, each coming from one of the countries bordering it, to signify participation and joint dialogue. The work presented here in the catalogue is, in a reduced format, a unique representation of that intention and that welcoming project.
