Wilhelm Thöny used the painting “Vorstadt mit sitzender Frau” from 1914 by Albert Weisgerber – a painter of the Neue Münchner Secession whom he held in high esteem – as a model for the composition. (See: Wilhelm Thöny.
Im Sog der Moderne, Neue Galerie Graz, Kerber Verlag, 2013, page 116–117) The “large version” (cat. rais. no. 158) was the only painting in the large club room of the Chamber of Labour Graz.
