Silver, of round form, lip with engraved coat of arms of Napoleon I as Emperor of France, diameter 20.8 cm, engraved inventory no. “471”, weight 240 g, master’s mark Martin-Guillaume Biennais, Paris warranty stamp 1809 - 1812, (Lu)
The service was manufactured between 1804 and 1815 by the Court Purveyor Martin-Guillaume Biennais. In 1812, Biennais provided all pieces of the “service de campagne” with engraved inventory numbers. The plate described here is one of the plates made between 1809 and 1812. The “service de campagne” was always carried in Napoleon’s carriage. After the battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815, the carriage was abandoned with the rest of the imperial cavalry at Belle-Alliance and fell into the hands of a Prussian regiment. Field Marshal Gebhard Blücher, commander of the Prussian troops, was given the carriage and its contents as a gift. For this reason, these items from the loot at Belle-Alliance are referred to as “Blücherbeute” (Blücher’s loot).
