Lotto No. 50

Tapestry,

Tapestry, - Tappeti orientali, tessuti, arazzi

Antwerp (Belgium), c. 378 x 426 cm, end of the 17th century, designed by Jan van der Goten; in Antwerp there were only small manufactories for the production of tapestries, and the latter very rarely feature the signature of a workshop – which explains why the presence of identifiable pieces is so rare. Nevertheless, the city was a major hub of important painters and cartoon designers for the grand baroque tapestry series. The present carpet comes from the studio of “Jan van der Goten”, who was active mainly for the important Antwerp dealer “Nicolaus Naulaerts”.

It is a very fine Flemish wool and silk weaving from a mythological Perseus series. In a courtly park landscape with fountain architecture, Perseus borrows Mercury’s winged sandals. Thanks to the sandals, the helmet of Pluto (which rendered him invisible) and the mirrored shield of Minerva, Perseus is subsequently able to slay the snake-tressed head of the “Gorgon Medusa”. With a large border frame typical of the period, the present complete piece is in extremely good colour condition and overall state of preservation. Wholly original galloon with numerous repairs and slightly damaged areas. Mounted entirely on linen fabric on the back, with Velcro strips probably for hanging. (MA)
