Wood, pigments, 57 cm high. A 19th century example of an anthropomorphized buffalo. These helmet masks, horned animal heads, are called Bonu Amuen or 'gods of the bush'. Danced with during funerals of important men and in ceremonies to discipline people and protect villages, the women are forbidden to observe the masquerades, which are associated with violence and aggression.
