An important early Fang figure éyéma-o-byéri, Ngumba style.
Cameroon or Gabon, late 19th century. Wood, pigment, 44 cm high, exhibition label. This solemn male ancestor statue, seated, arms folded at the chest holding a cup is a fine example of Byeri guardian figure, representing an ancestor. In Fang philosophy, these sculptures were expected to balance duality; at birth, men inherit both male sperm (action) and female blood (reflection). This statue has a solemn epression, but has the plump arms of a child, elemnts of the Ngontang female helmet masks and small breasts. The byeri figure holds its hands together with a stylized magical horn between the fingers and would have served as a guardian sitting on top of a cylindrical box containing relics. (VJ)
