Lotto No. 25

An important early Fang figure éyéma-o-byéri, Ngumba style.

An important early Fang figure éyéma-o-byéri, Ngumba style. - Arte Tribale

Cameroon or Gabon, late 19th century. Wood, pigment, 44 cm high, exhibition label. This solemn male ancestor statue, seated, arms folded at the chest holding a cup is a fine example of Byeri guardian figure, representing an ancestor. In Fang philosophy, these sculptures were expected to balance duality; at birth, men inherit both male sperm (action) and female blood (reflection). This statue has a solemn epression, but has the plump arms of a child, elemnts of the Ngontang female helmet masks and small breasts. The byeri figure holds its hands together with a stylized magical horn between the fingers and would have served as a guardian sitting on top of a cylindrical box containing relics. (VJ)

Provenance:
René Rasmussen (1912-1979) Paris;
Robert Jacobsen (1912-1993) Copenhagen;
Sotheby's, London, 9 April 1984, lot 132. Private collection, Sweden. Exhibited: Stockholm, Sweden: "Före Picasso. Afrikansk konst i svensk ägo/Before Picasso. African Art in Swedish Collections", Liljevalchs Konsthall, 1988-1989.
