A very fine Songye figure, early 20th century, R. d. Congo.
Wood, metal and horn (later added), 43 cm high. These figures were created in cooperation of a carver or workshop and a trained ritual practitioner 'nganga'. The sculptor has divided the body evenly in sections that define the head, torso and legs. The nganga added the magical substances to the wooden sculpture, attached or embedded in the head and horn.
