Pwoom Itok mask Kuba, R. d. Congo.
Wood, pigments, 27 cm high, early 20th century. To show the status of high-ranking members of the BaKuba, elaborate headdresses in a U-shape were worn, covered in raffia textile. The cowrie shells symbolize wealth, the feathers the rank. These masks were worn by masqueraders at initiations and burials to signify elders' knowledge. This Pwoom Itok mask probably represents a high-ranking male warrior. (VJ)
