Narra Wood, pigment, 49 cm high. These 'Bulul figures'are placed in rice granaries in order to protect and promote the rice harvest. The figures receive sacrificial offerings during ritual ceremonies. The rice, considered the most sacred of foods, was stored in closely guarded granaries. With ceremonial cycles and ecologically sound management of water and land, the Ifugao have prevailed for thousands of years. (VJ)
