Wood, 117 cm high. One of the most striking figures from Melanesia, these hooked figures represent the guardian of the sun, containing the spirits of warfare and hunting. Large Yipwon sculptures such as this one, were owned by clans, hidden in secret caves whilst the smaller figures were individually owned and served as hunting amulets. (VJ)
